Mission Statement
The Washington County Commission for Women (WCCW) acts as a catalyst for change by educating the community on women's issues, promoting the role of women, advocating on behalf of women, and celebrating the accomplishments of women.
History
In 1972, the Maryland Commission for the Status of Women was established. In 1976, the name was amended to its current title, the Maryland Commission for Women.
In 1987, the Washington County Commissioners requested legislation to establish a Commission for Women. Senate Bill 785 of Maryland was passed in both houses. The bill was signed by the Governor on April 29, 1987.
Purpose
- Be a source of information and referral for women.
- Identify and research solutions to the problems of women and girls.
- Promote the full and equal participation for women in work, government, society.
- Direct attention to critical problems confronting women.
- Recommend methods of overcoming discrimination against women in employment.
- Encourage women to become candidates for public office.
- Secure appropriate recognition of women’s accomplishments and contributions to Washington County
Goals
- Promote full and equal participation of women in work, government, and society.
- Provide statistics and information on the demographics of Washington County of interest of women.
- Bring the concerns of women from Washington County to the legislature.
- Educate legislators and voters of pending legislation affecting women.
- Encourage women to serve on local commissions and other policy making boards.
- Sponsor annual student essay contest during Women’s History Month.
- Complete formal studies of specific issues affecting women in Washington County
